Context
During a conversation with my former colleague, Rich, who actively participates in his child's school volunteer activities, I learned about the challenges parents and teachers encounter with the current management system.
Recognizing the opportunity to improve volunteer coordination, I embarked on designing Kawani to address these pain points and enhance the volunteer experience. Additionally, understanding the importance of practical implementation and scalability, I reached out to Sara, a former colleague and experienced application developer, for consultation. Collaborating with Sara ensured that the design considerations align with real-world development needs, enhancing the project's feasibility and potential for future scalability.
Kawani, a volunteer management app, was developed in collaboration with Falcon Academy of Science and Technology, specifically for its Elementary and Secondary School campuses. The project originated from discussions with Falcon Watch D.O.G.S. Chair Rich Amparo, who sought to improve the volunteer management system at his children’s school. This case study delves into the journey of designing Kawani to simplify scheduling, improve communication, and enhance the overall volunteer experience for parents and teachers.

The Challenge
Parents and teachers struggle with inefficient volunteer management systems. Existing systems lack scheduling flexibility, real-time updates, and easy registration and communication. The reliance on insecure platforms like Calendly for sign-ups and Google Calendar for updates further complicates the process.
How might we design a volunteer management app that offers:
Flexible scheduling
Real-time updates
Seamless registration
These features are essential for enhancing the user experience for parents and teachers.
The Goal
The goal of Kawani is to create a user-friendly volunteer management app that simplifies scheduling, enhances communication, and improves the overall volunteer experience for parents and teachers involved in school activities.
The Results
The usability study yielded highly positive feedback with an NPS of 100% (5 participants rated 10, and 2 rated 9). Users praised the platform's clean, intuitive interface and ease of navigation. One participant noted, "Ease of use. Lots of spots for organizers to enter valuable information about the events/volunteering opportunities."
